LSG Secures First Win of IPL 2025 with Thrilling Chase Against SRH

In a high-octane IPL 2025 clash, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered their first win of the season by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by five wickets. Chasing a challenging target of 191, LSG displayed remarkable composure and aggressive batting to secure victory, handing SRH their first loss of the season. Following the match, SRH captain Pat Cummins shared his thoughts on the game, acknowledging the team’s shortcomings and the need for strategic improvements.
Pat Cummins Reacts to SRH’s Defeat
After the match, Pat Cummins stated, “The pitch was different, but we had to score runs quickly. The opposition batted well, and overall, the wicket was still pretty good. It had some grip, but it was still playable. Every match, bowlers come in with a plan, and they executed it well. Reaching 190 was still a great effort from our team.”
He further emphasized the importance of having a settled batsman throughout the innings, similar to how Ishan Kishan had anchored a game earlier in the season. “This time, we couldn’t get as many opportunities to play big shots. We had eight strong batters in the team, but we needed to build partnerships better. We have to analyze what could have been done better and where we need improvements. It’s a long tournament, and we need to stay focused on upcoming matches,” he added.
Match Summary: SRH vs. LSG
Winning the toss, LSG captain Rishabh Pant opted to field first. Pre-match speculations suggested that SRH could post a massive total, potentially reaching 300 runs, but LSG’s bowling attack, led by Shardul Thakur, proved otherwise. Thakur struck early, dismissing Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan on consecutive deliveries in his second over, giving LSG the perfect start.
Despite the early blows, Travis Head played an explosive knock, smashing boundaries in quick succession to help SRH score 62 runs in the powerplay. However, once Head departed for 47 runs, the SRH innings started crumbling. Nitish Reddy contributed 32 runs, while Heinrich Klaasen fell victim to an unfortunate run-out at 26 runs. Towards the end, Aniket Verma played a blistering cameo, smashing 36 runs off just 13 balls with five sixes, pushing SRH to a total of 190/9 in 20 overs.
LSG’s Power-Packed Chase
While SRH’s batting lineup garnered significant attention, LSG’s response was equally dominant. Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran took charge of the chase, demonstrating their power-hitting abilities. After losing an early wicket, Pooran and Marsh went on a rampage, dismantling SRH’s bowling attack with aggressive stroke play.
Nicholas Pooran scored the fastest fifty of the IPL 2025 season, reaching the milestone in just 18 balls. His innings included a flurry of boundaries and towering sixes. The partnership between Pooran and Marsh proved crucial, as they added 50 runs in just 19 balls and extended it to a 100-run stand in 37 balls. Pooran’s explosive 70 off 26 balls and Marsh’s steady 52 off 31 balls anchored LSG’s successful chase.
LSG ultimately secured the win with five wickets in hand, registering their first points on the leaderboard and delivering a strong statement for the season ahead.
